Le PS est représenté depuis 1943 au Conseil fédéral et il dispose – depuis 1959 – de deux sièges au gouvernement, actuellement occupés par Simonetta Sommaruga et Alain Berset. C’est lors du Congrès de 1929 que le PS s’est prononcé pour la première fois en faveur d’une intégration au Conseil fédéral. Il aura cependant dû attendre 14 ans pour qu’un socialiste y soit enfin élu par l’Assemblée fédérale, en l’occurrence le Zurichois Ernst Nobs. En 1953, le PS est à nouveau passé dans l’opposition. En effet, le lendemain du rejet de la réforme financière, Max Weber a présenté sa démission. Six ans plus tard, le PS est revenu au gouvernement avec les deux sièges qu’il compte encore aujourd’hui.
